Kettle for After Effects - the boil you can bake
Kettle is a nifty preset for After Effects that can add a simple "boil" or wiggle effect to any shape layer path, to give your animation that frame-by-frame feel. It differs from other boil techniques (e.g. 'Wiggle paths' or effects like 'Turbulent displace'/'Roughen edges') in that it actually outputs a shape layer path, instead of simply distorting the render. This gives it a few beneficial properties:
- Fully compatible with Bodymovin/Lottie, so you can have animations that feel frame-by-frame, rendered beautifully on websites
- The boiled path data is accessible by expressions or other layers, in case you'd like other objects to react to the shape of the path
- The boiled path animation can be baked, reducing processing requirements in complex scenes. (Mind you, unbaked the effect can be pretty resource-heavy. I recommend Easy Bake for the baking!)
Kettle is unfortunately not able to produce a rough, hand-drawn stroke appearance, although you can experiment with the 'Wave' and 'Taper' options under the 'Stroke' menu to add some variance to the stroke itself.
